Narrative:
On takeoff with a 15 KT x-wind, power was set to takeoff power. At about 60 KTS, the first officer made a comment that the #2 engine instruments were fluctuating. West/O much verification, an abort was achieved at low speed west/O incident. A static runup was accomplished to look for possible deviations from the norm. (No deviations noted). A second takeoff was attempted and at 60 KTS with power set all indications appeared normal however, at about 90 KTS the PNF (first officer) reported ni and EPR fluctuations. The takeoff was aborted at about 100 KT airspeed west/O incident. The brake cooling chart was consulted and found to be within parameters, however, a mechanic was summoned to do a visibility inspection of the brakes and tires before continuation to the gate for a full shutdown. Summary: aircraft probably should have been checked by maintenance after the first abort even though pilots could not give much of a description of early suspicions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG TWICE REJECTS ATTEMPTED TKOF DUE IMPROPER INSTRUMENT INDICATIONS OF #2 ENGINE.
Narrative: ON TKOF WITH A 15 KT X-WIND, PWR WAS SET TO TKOF PWR. AT ABOUT 60 KTS, THE F/O MADE A COMMENT THAT THE #2 ENG INSTRUMENTS WERE FLUCTUATING. W/O MUCH VERIFICATION, AN ABORT WAS ACHIEVED AT LOW SPD W/O INCIDENT. A STATIC RUNUP WAS ACCOMPLISHED TO LOOK FOR POSSIBLE DEVS FROM THE NORM. (NO DEVS NOTED). A SECOND TKOF WAS ATTEMPTED AND AT 60 KTS WITH PWR SET ALL INDICATIONS APPEARED NORMAL HOWEVER, AT ABOUT 90 KTS THE PNF (F/O) RPTED NI AND EPR FLUCTUATIONS. THE TKOF WAS ABORTED AT ABOUT 100 KT AIRSPD W/O INCIDENT. THE BRAKE COOLING CHART WAS CONSULTED AND FOUND TO BE WITHIN PARAMETERS, HOWEVER, A MECH WAS SUMMONED TO DO A VIS INSPECTION OF THE BRAKES AND TIRES BEFORE CONTINUATION TO THE GATE FOR A FULL SHUTDOWN. SUMMARY: ACFT PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHKED BY MAINT AFTER THE FIRST ABORT EVEN THOUGH PLTS COULD NOT GIVE MUCH OF A DESCRIPTION OF EARLY SUSPICIONS.
