Narrative:

Departing kin we had filed UG3 benet A55R jfk. We were given a clearance at #1 position for UG503 (although misunderstood), followed immediately by takeoff clearance. We had rerted because of significant thunderstorm activity directly north of kin. We were in VFR conditions and informed after takeoff that we had been rerted and unable to avoid thunderstorm as cleared. We were given our original routing to jfk. The clearance was misunderstood due to the native accent and the term, 'as filed.' an assumption was made by us due to WX on original routing that we were flying as filed. I recommend that clearance be given sooner than #1 so that it can be given the careful attention it deserves.

Title: WDB FLT CREW GIVEN CLRNC WHEN #1 'AS FILED,' BUT MEANT DIFFERENTLY THAN WHAT CREW UNDERSTOOD.

Narrative: DEPARTING KIN WE HAD FILED UG3 BENET A55R JFK. WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC AT #1 POS FOR UG503 (ALTHOUGH MISUNDERSTOOD), FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY TKOF CLRNC. WE HAD RERTED BECAUSE OF SIGNIFICANT TSTM ACTIVITY DIRECTLY N OF KIN. WE WERE IN VFR CONDITIONS AND INFORMED AFTER TKOF THAT WE HAD BEEN RERTED AND UNABLE TO AVOID TSTM AS CLRED. WE WERE GIVEN OUR ORIGINAL ROUTING TO JFK. THE CLRNC WAS MISUNDERSTOOD DUE TO THE NATIVE ACCENT AND THE TERM, 'AS FILED.' AN ASSUMPTION WAS MADE BY US DUE TO WX ON ORIGINAL ROUTING THAT WE WERE FLYING AS FILED. I RECOMMEND THAT CLRNC BE GIVEN SOONER THAN #1 SO THAT IT CAN BE GIVEN THE CAREFUL ATTN IT DESERVES.
