Narrative:
During cruise at FL330 on J207 south of florence VOR I found myself west of course and made a right turn to correct toward the centerline. During the turn my attention was diverted and I inadvertently allowed the turn to continue past the appropriate heading. As I went past the centerline to the right I began a left turn to recorrect. (I believe the farthest right heading was approximately 070 degrees.) a few seconds later the controller called and asked for an immediate turn to 360 degrees. I increased turn rate rapidly; checking the area around us I could see no other traffic. At this time the controller told another aircraft to turn to heading 180 degrees. As I came back to centerline I asked if I should maintain 360 degrees or proceed on the arwy. The controller cleared me to the florence VOR. Later he called and said that we had an altitude deviation and gave some other information I did not understand. I asked for the information again and he said to contact ZJX quality assurance and gave me the phone #. Upon arrival at ewr I called jax and was told we had a traffic conflict with an aircraft descending through FL330. Supplemental information from acn 143691: I estimate that we were 4 mi east of J207 when we began our correction back to arwy.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT AVOIDED AS ARTCC RADAR CTLR TURNS ACR, WHO IS PROCEEDING OFF AIRWAY, AWAY FROM CONFLICTING TRAFFIC IN DESCENT THROUGH IS ALT.
Narrative: DURING CRUISE AT FL330 ON J207 S OF FLORENCE VOR I FOUND MYSELF W OF COURSE AND MADE A RIGHT TURN TO CORRECT TOWARD THE CENTERLINE. DURING THE TURN MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED AND I INADVERTENTLY ALLOWED THE TURN TO CONTINUE PAST THE APPROPRIATE HDG. AS I WENT PAST THE CENTERLINE TO THE RIGHT I BEGAN A LEFT TURN TO RECORRECT. (I BELIEVE THE FARTHEST RIGHT HDG WAS APPROX 070 DEGS.) A FEW SECS LATER THE CTLR CALLED AND ASKED FOR AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO 360 DEGS. I INCREASED TURN RATE RAPIDLY; CHKING THE AREA AROUND US I COULD SEE NO OTHER TFC. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR TOLD ANOTHER ACFT TO TURN TO HDG 180 DEGS. AS I CAME BACK TO CENTERLINE I ASKED IF I SHOULD MAINTAIN 360 DEGS OR PROCEED ON THE ARWY. THE CTLR CLRED ME TO THE FLORENCE VOR. LATER HE CALLED AND SAID THAT WE HAD AN ALT DEVIATION AND GAVE SOME OTHER INFO I DID NOT UNDERSTAND. I ASKED FOR THE INFO AGAIN AND HE SAID TO CONTACT ZJX QUALITY ASSURANCE AND GAVE ME THE PHONE #. UPON ARR AT EWR I CALLED JAX AND WAS TOLD WE HAD A TFC CONFLICT WITH AN ACFT DSNDING THROUGH FL330. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 143691: I ESTIMATE THAT WE WERE 4 MI E OF J207 WHEN WE BEGAN OUR CORRECTION BACK TO ARWY.
