Narrative:
I was showing a student how he could fly from W18 laurel suburban airport, to W92 sky bryce, west/O having to talk to any controllers, and do it legally and safely! However, we had contacted washington flight service for an update on WX about 5 mins earlier and we're told we were #5 in line for information. If we had received an immediate or more timely briefing we would have gone back to monitoring dulles departure control at an earlier time. This is what I encourage my students to do in any event, even if they don't want to talk to approach/departure. As we passed north of dulles iad, our left wing blocked our view of aircraft departing on runway's 1L and 1R. My student saw the air carrier medium large transport about 3 seconds before potential impact into our lower left side. As I looked to our left after my student's call, it was obvious that the medium large transport, which was in a climb had already started an evasive turn to his right to pass behind us at our altitude, while continuing his climb.
