Narrative:

While executing a visual approach at night we received an altitude alert from ATC. I had selected an altitude which would allow the aircraft to level off at the final approach point but apparently on base leg that altitude was lower than the MVA. Terrain was in sight at all times and we did not receive an egwps warning. We descended into the MVA (minimum vectoring altitude) of this sector which apparently triggered the ATC low altitude alert. Maintain awareness of airspace and terrain constraints even when conducting visual approaches.
