Narrative:
After landing there is a very short taxi from the runway to the terminal; [so] minimal opportunity to obtain the 2 minute cool down for the engines to be shut off. The captain was taxiing slowly to the gate and told me to shut the left engine down as soon as we have 2 minutes. I looked down to look at the times off the FMS and went straight to shutting down the left engine. At that time the standard master warning and master caution messages were appearing therefore I immediately checked them and turned off the warnings. [Then] I looked up and noticed the captain [had] taxied past our gate and was going into the wrong gate. I told him that we passed [the gate] and he immediately stopped and began turning. The captain added enough thrust to blow over construction equipment. This was caused by a combination of the captain not noticing the ramp workers standing outside waving us in; forgetting the gate number assigned as well as the first officer (myself) 'heads down' during taxi-in.
