Narrative:
Inadvertent entry into burbank arsa on climbout northbound. Assumed adequate familiarity of the area. Knew arsa existed above and there was clearance of terrain to the north below the arsa. Discovered violation at 3300' (300' above arsa floor) while checking TCA chart. Immediate descent was made below arsa and burbank approach was called for arsa clearance as the arsa and mountains are too close together to clear without entering arsa. (Arsa was exited less than 1 min after violation.) no evasive action was necessary. Contributing factors include assuming that my route was clear of the arsa because I am familiar with the area (but not with departing whiteman field northbound). Also the burbank arsa does not allow reasonable climb angle to clear mountains north of whiteman without entering arsa. I knew the arsa did not include the mountains but stopped just short of them and assumed (wrongly) a normal climb to just above the mountains was below the arsa. Cause: pilot (myself) failed to adequately familiarize himself with the airspace for that particular departure. Solution: pilot should familiarize him/herself with all airspace near the path of intended flight. Also if the floor of the burbank arsa were higher in this area it would make northbound departures easier/possible for those without radios or those who do not want to bother with approach control or on those days when approach control is too busy.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA UNAUTH PENETRATION OF BUR ARSA ON CLIMB OUT FROM WHP.
Narrative: INADVERTENT ENTRY INTO BURBANK ARSA ON CLIMBOUT NBND. ASSUMED ADEQUATE FAMILIARITY OF THE AREA. KNEW ARSA EXISTED ABOVE AND THERE WAS CLRNC OF TERRAIN TO THE N BELOW THE ARSA. DISCOVERED VIOLATION AT 3300' (300' ABOVE ARSA FLOOR) WHILE CHECKING TCA CHART. IMMEDIATE DSNT WAS MADE BELOW ARSA AND BURBANK APCH WAS CALLED FOR ARSA CLRNC AS THE ARSA AND MOUNTAINS ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER TO CLEAR WITHOUT ENTERING ARSA. (ARSA WAS EXITED LESS THAN 1 MIN AFTER VIOLATION.) NO EVASIVE ACTION WAS NECESSARY. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDE ASSUMING THAT MY ROUTE WAS CLEAR OF THE ARSA BECAUSE I AM FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA (BUT NOT WITH DEPARTING WHITEMAN FIELD NBND). ALSO THE BURBANK ARSA DOES NOT ALLOW REASONABLE CLIMB ANGLE TO CLEAR MOUNTAINS N OF WHITEMAN WITHOUT ENTERING ARSA. I KNEW THE ARSA DID NOT INCLUDE THE MOUNTAINS BUT STOPPED JUST SHORT OF THEM AND ASSUMED (WRONGLY) A NORMAL CLIMB TO JUST ABOVE THE MOUNTAINS WAS BELOW THE ARSA. CAUSE: PLT (MYSELF) FAILED TO ADEQUATELY FAMILIARIZE HIMSELF WITH THE AIRSPACE FOR THAT PARTICULAR DEP. SOLUTION: PLT SHOULD FAMILIARIZE HIM/HERSELF WITH ALL AIRSPACE NEAR THE PATH OF INTENDED FLT. ALSO IF THE FLOOR OF THE BURBANK ARSA WERE HIGHER IN THIS AREA IT WOULD MAKE NBOUND DEPS EASIER/POSSIBLE FOR THOSE WITHOUT RADIOS OR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO BOTHER WITH APCH CTL OR ON THOSE DAYS WHEN APCH CTL IS TOO BUSY.
