Narrative:
Our aircraft was cleared for touch-and-go's #1. After this; aircraft Y was cleared for a short approach from the opposite downwind. No traffic advisories were given to either aircraft. Hearing the landing clearance of aircraft 2 after ours; I was looking for traffic to follow behind ours. When our aircraft rolled out on final; aircraft 2 came into view about 1/8mi from ours also turning final. The traffic was blocked by our wing while maneuvering to final. We added full power and climb back to traffic patter to rejoin the downwind behind other aircraft in the pattern. I called the control tower after the flight to get clarification on what had happened and they told me that it was a controller in training who made the mistake and that they were debriefing the event.
