Narrative:
After turning left downwind after takeoff [another pilot] announced a 5 miles out for a 45 on the downwind. As I approached midfield on the downwind I made a call of midfield on the downwind leg. The flight instructor on the ground then observed [another aircraft] enter the pattern from behind and below me and make an abrupt base leg turn. I did not see the plane until he had passed under me and was making an early base turn. [The other aircraft] ended up having to do a go-around due to an aircraft that was already on the runway. A second observer on the ground stated that the abrupt base turn under me appeared to be intentional.
