Narrative:

On descent engine running rough and oil starting splashing out of engine and onto cockpit. I contacted approach and [advised ATC]. I decided to kill engine and fuel to engine and pick a field to land in. I landed safely in a field without injury to person plane or property. There was no damage to aircraft other than a small cowling puncture exit hole and oil covering the cowling and cockpit window. Upon gathering of records for preparation for insurance and FAA reports I noticed my medical had expired last month all other documents were in effect and proper.
