Narrative:
5/90 I was told to taxi to runway 19. While I was on the taxiway I was advised by ground control that some emergency vehs were coming down the taxiway and that I should move to the right side. Communication was not good with ground control and I thought that I was told to proceed to runway 14. (Taxiway to 14 crosses the end of runway 19.) I did not realize the 'proceed to runway' 14 was only information concerning the destination of the emergency vehs until I had crossed runway 19 and saw the emergency vehs on runway 14. At this time I turned around and recrossed runway 19. I had been making a comparison check between the dg and compass. I was informed by ground control that I had crossed an active arwy. I switched to tower frequency and informed them that I was ready for takeoff. I thought I received clearance but was informed during takeoff that I had received takeoff clearance. Contributing factors: poor communication, not wearing my headset, did not rechk with ground when I thought I had been changed to runway 14. I should not have moved once I crossed runway 19 until I rechked with ground. I should have rechked with tower about clearance to takeoff. Corrective action: 3 hours with CFI at controled airport. Once a mistake has been made, a pilot should stop, reevaluate the situation and take whatever corrective action is required at this point.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMT UNAUTH TAXI RWY CROSSING TKOF.
Narrative: 5/90 I WAS TOLD TO TAXI TO RWY 19. WHILE I WAS ON THE TXWY I WAS ADVISED BY GND CTL THAT SOME EMER VEHS WERE COMING DOWN THE TXWY AND THAT I SHOULD MOVE TO THE RIGHT SIDE. COM WAS NOT GOOD WITH GND CTL AND I THOUGHT THAT I WAS TOLD TO PROCEED TO RWY 14. (TXWY TO 14 CROSSES THE END OF RWY 19.) I DID NOT REALIZE THE 'PROCEED TO RWY' 14 WAS ONLY INFO CONCERNING THE DEST OF THE EMER VEHS UNTIL I HAD CROSSED RWY 19 AND SAW THE EMER VEHS ON RWY 14. AT THIS TIME I TURNED AROUND AND RECROSSED RWY 19. I HAD BEEN MAKING A COMPARISON CHK BTWN THE DG AND COMPASS. I WAS INFORMED BY GND CTL THAT I HAD CROSSED AN ACTIVE ARWY. I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AND INFORMED THEM THAT I WAS READY FOR TKOF. I THOUGHT I RECEIVED CLRNC BUT WAS INFORMED DURING TKOF THAT I HAD RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: POOR COM, NOT WEARING MY HEADSET, DID NOT RECHK WITH GND WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN CHANGED TO RWY 14. I SHOULD NOT HAVE MOVED ONCE I CROSSED RWY 19 UNTIL I RECHKED WITH GND. I SHOULD HAVE RECHKED WITH TWR ABOUT CLRNC TO TKOF. CORRECTIVE ACTION: 3 HRS WITH CFI AT CTLED ARPT. ONCE A MISTAKE HAS BEEN MADE, A PLT SHOULD STOP, REEVALUATE THE SITUATION AND TAKE WHATEVER CORRECTIVE ACTION IS REQUIRED AT THIS POINT.
