Narrative:

Prior to leaving from my [home] field for ZZZ I called the AWOS phone number and there was no answer. I did this several times. I checked NOAA weather for ZZZ and the local weather was clear and sunny. I had checked airnav for ZZZ field to get frequencies and runway information the night before. I proceeded with my flight. Prior to descending I tuned into AWOS-2 and there was no information being transmitted. I tried continuously as I got closer with the same results. My pilot friend who was meeting me there was a couple of minutes ahead of me. I had never been to this airport before. High terrain is near the airport. My friend landed as I was on right downwind and flying over a high ridge obscuring the runway on my right. I announced right base and while turning final. I could see runway was closed with a large yellow X but the taxiway clear and available with no obstructions so I landed as my friend did a couple of minutes before. It was very quiet and not busy. The landing on the hard surface was uneventful and normal. I taxied to the parking area and noticed orange wheel blocks at the taxiway entrance at the parking area. After I got out of my airplane I saw someone driving towards the hangar area and stopped to ask him if the airport was closed and he told me it was. I now realized I landed in error. I also saw another pilot preparing his plane to depart the airport. It was apparent he is a tenant at the airport.the issue I have is AWOS and the phone number for AWOS was not operational but should have been announcing the airport is closed. I inadvertently missed a NOTAM that my pilot friend checked on the FAA link for notams for this airport and was unable to find it prior to landing. I along with most pilots rely on AWOS information for information for situation like this. It is just another avenue to information in case you miss something. We were met by several pilot/tenants who expressed their frustration with the airport closure. Most if not all the pilots based at the field were not notified of the closure until the day before it was closed. We were told a sign was placed at the airport the day of the closure so arriving pilots would know. We were told the manager is a non-pilot which makes it awkward to complain about issues at the airport. The concerned pilot/tenants have several other safety issues that have not been addressed.I recommend that AWOS frequency and the phone number be operational and broadcast the airport closure. This is one of several sources pilots rely on. After realizing my error I departed the airport without further issue.
