Narrative:
Maintenance determined after we took off from ewr en route to nrt that our #1 engine was not up to the long overwater flight. While we were between ymm and yye, our flight dispatch had a message relayed to us to divert to sea. We called our maintenance department through high level FSS. They offered little information re: the problem with the engine. We complied with company and landed at sea after dumping 80000 pounds of fuel. Company procedures and facs are not conducive to good communications with dispatch. Even though we were in constant VHF contact with ATC, the company evidently had a problem reaching our flight.
