Narrative:
We were waiting on a taxiway abeam the 'alleyway' that leads to our gate. We thought after about 1 hour of waiting, we were cleared to taxi to our gate. We thought we were holding short of the taxiway that leads to the gate and that all we would have to do is make a left turn to proceed down the alleyway. When cleared to taxi to the gate, we made the left turn and after already committed, ground informed us that we were not on a taxiway. We were on concrete, and did not run over anything. Conditions that led to this were end of a long day, poor lighting, inadequate taxi markings, night time.
