Narrative:
Upon takeoff; positive rate; gear up. Gear did not fully retract (three orange gear door lights and one red nose gear unsafe light) followed by '#2 hydraulic iso valve' caution light and immediate notice of loss of number 2 hydraulic quantity; [we] continued the takeoff sequence through 1500 feet. After we were stable; I gave the first officer the radios and we began to assess the situation. We followed the caution light checklist and assessed fuel (did not have enough to continue to destination at 140kts due to the gear doors being open; plus a lot of storms in the area; which required deviation). Called dispatch to confirm ZZZ was our best option and then made the decision to return to the field. Notified flight attendant and passengers and held over ZZZ VOR while we ran the checklists. After alternate gear extension completed; we proceeded with the VOR runway 22 and landed without incident. Taxied to the ramp and deplaned; eventually cancelling the flight. Causation [was] the loss of number 2 hydraulic quantity (only had about .5 a quart left) which lead to '#2 hydraulic iso valve' caution light and landing gear not fully retracting.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: Dash 8 flight crew reported that the landing gear failed to retract fully due to a loss of hydraulic fluid. A successful return to the departure airport was accomplished.
Narrative: Upon takeoff; positive rate; gear up. Gear did not fully retract (three orange gear door lights and one red nose gear unsafe light) followed by '#2 HYD ISO VALVE' caution light and immediate notice of loss of number 2 hydraulic quantity; [we] continued the takeoff sequence through 1500 feet. Notified FA and passengers and held over ZZZ VOR while we ran the checklists. After alternate gear extension completed; we proceeded with the VOR Runway 22 and landed without incident. Taxied to the ramp and deplaned; eventually cancelling the flight. Causation [was] the loss of number 2 hydraulic quantity (only had about .5 a quart left) which lead to '#2 HYD ISO VALVE' caution light and Landing gear not fully retracting.
