Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff at approximately 3;500 ft MSL the reverser for the left engine was noticed to be indicating unlocked. QRH for reverser unlock was run. [Advised ATC]. 5;000 ft MSL was maintained. Left engine was shut down and single engine landing was performed. Captain [was] PF (pilot flying); lca (line check airman) was PNF (pilot not flying) and first officer (first officer) was in observer seat. Two maintenance personnel were aboard as jump seaters. Upon landing and returning to the ramp; maintenance determined the reverser was not unlocked and there was an indication issue only. After return to ramp maintenance pinned the reverser and flight was continued to ZZZZ with same crew.no suggestions other than one QRH procedure. On the procedure for reverser unlocked; step 13 says use trailing edge flaps 20. Only later do you find out during the deferred items that you must use alternate flaps. For normal single engine ops there is no need for alternate flaps and so I would suggest the QRH to state in this condition at step 13 that alternate flaps will be needed.
