Narrative:
The marshaller guided us a few feet too far before calling for a stop and set brakes. With hand signals he informed that we would be pushed back a few feet before connecting the jetway. A tug arrived and was connected after which the marshaller signaled to release brakes. I did so and we were moved back a few feet and at the same time the marshaller disappeared from view and never signaled to set the brakes.a few seconds later while looking for the marshaller for some guidance I felt and heard the tow bar being disconnected at which point I set the brakes. I went down and talked to the marshaller and stressed the importance of remaining in view and providing continuous guidance to the flight crew until brakes are set.
