Narrative:
Dispatch advised aircraft in front of us experienced severe turbulence at FL370 on our track (we were at 36000 feet). Same aircraft reported better ride at 35000 feet. Higher was not an option; we requested lower from gander and were 'unable due to traffic'. Slowed to .79 mach and talked to purser 10 minutes prior to PIREP location. Advised purser to stow all carts and prepare for upcoming turbulence area and that we would ask flight attendants to be seated. 3 minutes prior to area; made the pubic address (PA) 'flight attendants take your jump seats' (twice). Experienced moderate turbulence through area. After reaching smoother air; made PA 'flight attendants - check in'. First - cabin crew apparently had no idea what to do with 'flight attendants - check in'... Could not get aft flight attendants to answer at all. (Apparently neither could [the] purser initially; but she followed through and made sure they were okay). Later in the flight; one of the flight attendants complained to the captain; who was on break during the event; that 'it was really rough when she was doing her service.' captain heard the PA ... Asked if she had taken her jump seat when we made the PA and she said she had not.
