Narrative:
During climb on [the] SID; at approximately 16;000 feet center gave a vector off the SID for the climb. I noticed the gear handle still in the up position but did not note any green indicator lights when I reached to place it in 'off.' I then noticed the left main gear was showing green with all others blank (including overhead panel indicators). I called for the QRH landing gear disagree checklist and we proceeded to run it. I also advised ATC of our situation and that I was going to slow the aircraft. They asked if I was declaring an emergency and I stated not at that time. We proceeded to finish the checklist and contact dispatch. Another aircraft in the vicinity flew across and underneath. They advised the landing gear appeared up.a tentative plan was made to lower and raise the gear at a closer position to ZZZ with the possibility of diverting to ZZZ1. Transfer of aircraft pilot flying duties was made to the first officer while I coordinated plans. Flight attendants and passengers were notified of our condition and the possibility of diversion. When the gear was cycled; the light remained illuminated. I [advised ATC] and advised that we were diverting to ZZZ1. I contacted ZZZ1 operations to advise and acquire a gate. Dispatch was notified of the diversion via radio. [Approach] asked if we wanted to do a low approach so a visual confirmation could be made. That was executed and a go-around was performed. They advised the landing gear appeared down and locked. [Approach] then asked if we intended to return to ZZZ1 or ZZZ. Given my current position and confidence in the overhead gear indications; I advised ZZZ. ATC then asked for confirmation that we were no longer an emergency aircraft which I confirmed. We contacted ZZZ1 operations to advise intentions and asked them to call ZZZ operations. I also contacted ZZZ operations myself via radio to advise them. A normal landing was made in ZZZ with no emergency equipment response.
