Narrative:

I was flying an medium large transport departing bur at XX34 PDT with initial climb clearance to 13000'. We were flying the vny 5 departure SID with initial heading of 210 degrees. We were on departure control frequency of 124.6 and then assigned 320 degrees with no climb restriction. At 2 DME east of vny an small transport passed across our nose at 7500' (the altitude we were passing through). The aircraft was approximately 1 mi or less in front of our nose. Our controller was questioned about the traffic that we were not warned about and he said to contact the next frequency for handoff. Next controller questioned about traffic and he said he had been trying to call us. We had never been handed off! We also had not been given a previous frequency to contact anyone on. Summary: controller error failing to give frequency or handoff or aircraft traffic advisory.
