Narrative:
During climb approximately 3000 feet AGL; 250 knots; I input some rudder trim; as the slip/skid indication on the primary flight display was not perfectly centered; this is normal operations for the crj. Shortly after that; I noticed the slip skid indicator all the way off to the left and the nose yawed approximately 3 degrees to the right. My first officer stated; 'look at your rudder trim' or something like that. The rudder trim indication was fully deflected to the right. I re-centered the rudder trim and we continued the flight uneventfully.rudder trim knobs with weak centering springs and wide dead bands in the middle is a known issue on the crj. However; this is the first time in three years of flying the crj that the knob has not returned properly to center. I have had runaway rudder trim happen to me in the simulator; and in both the simulator and the aircraft; I physically re-centered the knob after I add rudder trim before letting go of the knob to (presumably) stop rudder trim movement just to be sure.this event in of itself could be considered an outlier. However; if rudder trim runaway becomes a regular safety report; we should take action to either advise pilots of this as a safety issue and/or consider replacing rudder trim control units; preemptively if required. During normal flight; rudder trim position is not part of my normal scan. I personally will be more careful to watch the rudder trim position after rudder trim input in the future.
