Narrative:
We were asked to taxi to runway 12L from gate but to hold short of 12R at spot bravo on taxiway a. We held short at bravo 1. We were then given clearance to cross 12R to papa (midfield taxiway) as we crossed 12R to the opp taxiway entrance. Both crew members could not see the blue taxiway lights for entrance to pap taxiway. We immediately turned and taxied down the active runway 12R to echo taxiway approximately 150 yds down the runway to clear at echo. There was no collision or near mishap. The only traffic was on approximately 3 min final to 12R. We were on the runway approximately 30 seconds, at most. The reason for choosing to taxi down the active runway was that there was less danger by taxiing the runway we did than doing a 180 degree turn and returning to alpha where numerous aircraft were taxiing. By taxiing down the runway, we were clearing at the safest and fastest spot since bravo entrance at papa wasn't visible.
