Narrative:
Center issued instructions for a hold to delay us into ord, in the vicinity of kokomo VOR. We were asked to hold west of kokomo, we denied those instructions, because there was a thunderstorm located above and west at kokomo VOR. We were then issued instructions to hold 'on the 070 degrees right 20 DME fix of kokomo right turns, southwest of fix.' proximity to the thunderstorm forced us to hold northeast of that fix at the 35 mi fix. We were then questioned by ATC re: our position and explained the 20 DME fix southwest was too close to an advancing thunderstorm, moving eward. We should have advised ATC that we needed the 35 mi fix instead of the 20 mi fix. No traffic conflicts resulted, and we then were given instructions to leave the hold and proceed to ord.

Title: FLT CREW OF LGT INSTRUCTED TO HOLD PATTERN 070 DEGREE RADIAL OF OKK 20 MILE LEG. FLT CREW HELD ON 35 MILE FIX WITHOUT ADVISING CENTER CTLR.
Narrative: CENTER ISSUED INSTRUCTIONS FOR A HOLD TO DELAY US INTO ORD, IN THE VICINITY OF KOKOMO VOR. WE WERE ASKED TO HOLD W OF KOKOMO, WE DENIED THOSE INSTRUCTIONS, BECAUSE THERE WAS A TSTM LOCATED ABOVE AND W AT KOKOMO VOR. WE WERE THEN ISSUED INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD 'ON THE 070 DEGS R 20 DME FIX OF KOKOMO RIGHT TURNS, SW OF FIX.' PROX TO THE TSTM FORCED US TO HOLD NE OF THAT FIX AT THE 35 MI FIX. WE WERE THEN QUESTIONED BY ATC RE: OUR POS AND EXPLAINED THE 20 DME FIX SW WAS TOO CLOSE TO AN ADVANCING TSTM, MOVING EWARD. WE SHOULD HAVE ADVISED ATC THAT WE NEEDED THE 35 MI FIX INSTEAD OF THE 20 MI FIX. NO TFC CONFLICTS RESULTED, AND WE THEN WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO LEAVE THE HOLD AND PROCEED TO ORD.
