Narrative:
Transitioning to a left downwind for runway xy at ZZZ (we were approximately 8.4 miles south of airport). Twin aircraft flew over top of our aircraft and was in contact with tower as well as we were. Tower had us confirm our position and told other aircraft to stop descent and reported us as traffic to the other aircraft. The other aircraft flew over us from 11 o'clock to 5 o'clock and continued descent without ever seeing us. We took evasive action once we saw aircraft from rear seat and we descended and turned 20 degrees to the left to turn away from the other aircraft. The other aircraft never saw us as they were asking tower for our position all the way to their landing.
