Narrative:

We were given clearance to give way to an airbus A319 taxiing eastbound then taxi to runway 8R. We were at spot Z and proceeded to [the intersection] after the airbus passed going eastbound. As I was turning left on taxiway X; I saw the nose of another aircraft approaching out the first officer's window. I had no ability to see the aircraft prior to that point since he would have been at my 5 o'clock position. I was a well into the intersection when I spotted the 767; so I veered left and added power with the assumption he would hit me if he kept coming and I stopped in the intersection. I don't know how close my right wing or tail came to his nose but fortunately we both took appropriate action when he stopped abruptly and I veered left. He should have had a clear view of my aircraft as he was taxiing westbound on taxiway X and I would be coming from his left to center. I obtained the tower phone contact and called them upon arrival at our destination. They called me back the next morning and explained that the controller had erred in not giving either aircraft instructions to give way to the other.the controller clearly should have given instructions to one of us to give way to the other. I had no way of seeing the other aircraft approaching from behind and his clearance to taxi was given before we tuned to ground control; so we would have had no way of hearing the conflicting clearances.
