Narrative:
While descending on arrival into ZZZ; we were cleared direct zzzzz intersection and cross zzzzz intersection 6;000. While descending through about 8;500 ft we noticed a proximate threat which became an almost immediate RA descend warning. Captain responded and we were told by approach to increase rate of descent right after the RA. I gained visual contact with the traffic about the time TCAS said adjust vertical rate; and clear of conflict shortly after. Traffic passed 500 feet or so overhead.
