Narrative:
I noticed a gate checked smart bag in the jet bridge during the boarding process. We had the passenger come out to remove the battery from the bag. We were working to get the battery out when we discovered it was a non-removable battery. The pilot came into the jet bridge and informed [me] that there was room in the overhead; to delete the tag and have the passenger place the bag in the overhead. I explained to him and the flight attendants both that we do not accept smart bags with non-removable batteries in checked or carry-on bags. He again restated that he would be taking the bag in the overhead. This was also the passenger's return trip. Unfortunately; I did not get [the passenger's] name or pnr information. This was her return trip and the bag had not been caught in the check or transfer locations.
