Narrative:
First officer saw something and verbalized it. None of the crew could identify what it was initially. First officer had to turn to miss it. ATC did not tell us about it. As it passed less than 1/2 mile off the right wing; it looked like a partially deflated mylar weather balloon with a long string of dimly lit lights. We then told ATC we almost hit it. We also radioed back to departure airport operations and told them.
