Narrative:
We were level at FL230 and cleared to deviate left or right of course for weather. We picked what looked to be the best course to cross the line; but upon penetrating the clouds we encountered severe turbulence. The turbulence caused the auto pilot and comm failure. Also due to the turbulence we had an altitude loss of 2;000 ft. After stabilizing the airplane and checking on the passengers and climbing back to our assigned altitude; we were able to reset the autopilot. It took approximately 10 minutes to reestablish radio communication. Due to the fact we were above a solid layer we started to a descent in accordance with lost comm procedures while trying to re-establish communication. After several resets we were able to contact guard 121.5 and advise of the situation; they gave us san antonio approach's frequency. We advised them of our deviation and the cause and were able to land with no further incidents. Upon landing there were no injuries to passengers or crew and after a walk around of the plane no damage evident.
