Narrative:
I was climbing with jumpers around 6;500 MSL when [I] heard ATC. I asked if the controller 'had some traffic for me' and was told there was traffic 4 miles west of my position southwest bound at 11;000. I asked for the controller to please keep me updated. As I approached 10;000 MSL I asked multiple times for an update on the traffic and was told 'I'll get back to you.' I had no target on TCAS and continued climb through that altitude. At approximately 11;500 feet ATC called to clarify my altitude and told me I was told to stay below 10;500 (which I must have missed). At that time I noted the aircraft was more than 2 miles away on TCAS.potential prevention - the controller could have replied and advised with the conflicting aircraft's position.
