Narrative:
We took off from essex county airport from runway 27 heading nwbnd and maintaining 5 mi DME and (via IFR LORAN) from morristown air traffic area. At 1500' in haze and heading into sun we spotted mdt jet at 12 O'clock coming toward us at same altitude. We diverted left and mdt, which we think was on base for mmu runway 23 passed on right at what we estimated to be about 1000'. We reported this to edw tower and was told later that the mdt had also asked mmu tower about us. We proceeded over boonton reservoir and completed flight.
