Narrative:

Air carrier X was cleared into position on runway 4 at hou. I wasn't aware that another company air carrier Y was already in position on intersecting runway 30 waiting for takeoff clearance. I was in an medium large transport XXX and he was in a faster medium large transport model. I was cleared for takeoff (I was flying) and my first officer read back acknowledgement. I pushed up the power and started rolling. Fortunately my first officer noticed that when he unkeyed his microphone, after acknowledging, he heard the last few words of someone else acknowledging. He immediately told me to abort, which I did (only about 15 KTS). He recalled tower for takeoff confirmation, which they did, while also keyed air carrier Y that it was not for them. Air carrier Y aborted several thousand ft down the runway and tower wasn't aware of anything! The other aircraft stated 'tower, we thought that was for us--requesting taxi-back for another takeoff.' tower cleared his taxi, then was very silent. Due to workload, etc, controllers are not confirming or even listening to our readbacks just when we need it most. Tower was not busy in this situation and was totally unaware of the possible collision. Out of the 5 persons involved only my first officer heard the error. Tower had the only big picture, but I'm sure this would have gone down as another pilot error.

Title: SAME COMPANY SIMILAR A/N. ACR Y BEGAN TKOF WITHOUT CLRNC. PLT DEVIATION.

Narrative: ACR X WAS CLRED INTO POS ON RWY 4 AT HOU. I WASN'T AWARE THAT ANOTHER COMPANY ACR Y WAS ALREADY IN POS ON INTERSECTING RWY 30 WAITING FOR TKOF CLRNC. I WAS IN AN MLG XXX AND HE WAS IN A FASTER MLG MODEL. I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF (I WAS FLYING) AND MY F/O READ BACK ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. I PUSHED UP THE PWR AND STARTED ROLLING. FORTUNATELY MY F/O NOTICED THAT WHEN HE UNKEYED HIS MIC, AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING, HE HEARD THE LAST FEW WORDS OF SOMEONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGING. HE IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME TO ABORT, WHICH I DID (ONLY ABOUT 15 KTS). HE RECALLED TWR FOR TKOF CONFIRMATION, WHICH THEY DID, WHILE ALSO KEYED ACR Y THAT IT WAS NOT FOR THEM. ACR Y ABORTED SEVERAL THOUSAND FT DOWN THE RWY AND TWR WASN'T AWARE OF ANYTHING! THE OTHER ACFT STATED 'TWR, WE THOUGHT THAT WAS FOR US--REQUESTING TAXI-BACK FOR ANOTHER TKOF.' TWR CLRED HIS TAXI, THEN WAS VERY SILENT. DUE TO WORKLOAD, ETC, CTLRS ARE NOT CONFIRMING OR EVEN LISTENING TO OUR READBACKS JUST WHEN WE NEED IT MOST. TWR WAS NOT BUSY IN THIS SITUATION AND WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF THE POSSIBLE COLLISION. OUT OF THE 5 PERSONS INVOLVED ONLY MY F/O HEARD THE ERROR. TWR HAD THE ONLY BIG PICTURE, BUT I'M SURE THIS WOULD HAVE GONE DOWN AS ANOTHER PLT ERROR.
