Narrative:

We took off from ZZZ. On the climb out; passing approximately 8;000 [feet] MSL; we started to smell a strong electrical smoke odor; and then I noticed smoke billowing up of the bottom left windshield on the first officer's (first officer) side. I was flying and I pointed it out to the pilot not flying; who was the PIC (pilot-in-command). We followed [another aircraft] and [advised ATC]; notified the flight attendant (flight attendant) and then diverted into ZZZ1. Me and the pilot not flying thought it might be the windshield heat; so we turned it off and the smoke immediately stopped. We landed in ZZZ1 with the emergency vehicles standing by; no assistance was needed and we taxied to the gate without further incident.
