Narrative:

I was flying to gyh with VFR flight following. There were scattered clouds at 6;000 feet and at 3;000 feet MSL. Ten miles out from gyh; greer approach asked if I had the airport in sight and I replied that I didn't due to clouds and would advise when I had visual contact. After I descended below the scattered clouds and saw the airport; I advised greer approach and requested a frequency change. The controller was busy with other traffic and didn't respond. When the frequency was clear; I again made the request and again; got no response. On the third attempt; the controller finally granted a frequency change but by that time I was well within the gyh class D airspace; essentially in the pattern. I contacted gyh tower and the controller was very gracious about it.
