Narrative:
While on short final with gear down and flaps 30 an left hydraulic qty EICAS message appeared. The loss was confirmed by checking the left hydraulic quantity on the lower EICAS status page. After completing the before landing checklist we reviewed the list of components lost in the QRH and elected to land the airplane. The left hydraulic qty QRH checklist was completed after clearing the runway. Loss of left hydraulic [system] fluid.[my suggestion is] preventive maintenance. A hydraulic line between the engine cowling and engine was found to be chafing. This eventually wore a hole in the line.
