Narrative:
Prepared for takeoff on runway 14L at iah. After departure at 400' AGL captain noticed mast warning light illumination. Emergency checklist was called for. Departure control was notified of immediate return and cabin was notified by aural bell tones. Departure cleared flight for immediate landing on runway 27 at iah and asked if we needed emergency equipment and we stated that we did not need them. First officer ran the after takeoff checklist, emergency, descent and in range checklist and all were complied with. During this time the tail compartment high temperature light remained on. When flight was cleared to land on runway 27 at iah landing checklists was completed and when we turned from base leg to final and when power was reduced the high temperature light went out. After landing and after all checklists were complete we were cleared to taxi to gate and a ground service veh followed us to the gate. All times and actions were noted and log book write-up was complete and mechanics were called to the aircraft. Conclusion: if you ever have any malfunction or indication that something is wrong, land or return as soon as possible and have problem fixed. No heroics.
