Narrative:

Hand flying with MCP autothrottle engaged. F/ds on the EICAS caution aural sounded and annunciated autothrottle disconnect. Smell of electrical smoke became noticeable. Smoke coming from MCP above IAS/mash and heading windows. We donned our masks and requested immediate return to sfo. I disconnected the F/ds. Smoke dissipated and we returned to sfo west/O incident. Great handling by bay approach. Human performance was excellent further because of training and subsequent adoption of smoke procedures by company.
