Narrative:

My student and I were forced to make an emergency landing due to an engine failure. I was conducting an instrument training flight in a cessna 172 on an instrument flight plan. We had just left the hold at the ZZZ VOR and had been cleared for the VOR [approach]. The student was flying and we had an unexpected engine failure. I attempted to get the engine started again; and was unable to do so. I chose a field to land in that was off of our left wing within a few miles and we landed safely in the center of the field. There was no damage to the aircraft or property and no one was injured.
