Narrative:

Concern - we did not receive a verbal oceanic clearance from new york (ny) center or ny arinc. Communications with ny center regarding oceanic clearance was not smooth. Route kept us with ny oceanic. Prior to reaching kzwy airspace; ny center requested our muney estimate and mach and altitude request. We provided an estimate for muney and requested mach .80 and FL360. Ny center then pushed us to ny arinc and ny arinc provided us oceanic frequencies for ny and informed us to contact ny at 50 west on 8906 and secondary of 5598. We gave ny oceanic a courtesy call; which was followed almost immediately with our SELCAL check; (i.e. No voice response from ny oceanic). We replied 'SELCAL check ok'; and our secondary HF frequency which was followed up with; 'new york'. Shortly thereafter; the captain and I discussed that we never received our oceanic clearance altitude and mach. At this time; we were at FL350 and were maintaining mach .80. Since we requested FL360; but never received it; at XA55z we requested oceanic clearance altitude through controller pilot data link communication (cpdlc). At XA58z; we received a message to proceed direct to N4200.0w05000.0. At XB02z; we received a full route clearance; altitude; and mach through cpdlc. At the end of the clearance; we were advised to see NOTAM A0017 13 for changes to the new york oceanic clearance delivery procedures. (We were familiar with this older NOTAM procedure.) we then reviewed NOTAM A0017 13.additionally; there was some confusion as to when we should switch to ny. I copied and read back 'at 50W contact ny on 8906' the ca heard 'at 60W contact ny on 8906'. I sent another cpdlc request to clarify and the response was; 'switch to 8906 at 40W entering santa maria'. This was definitely not what either of us heard; nor read back. Communications need to be improved. Frequencies were copied and read back; however; incorrectly and; never corrected by ny.
