Narrative:
Tower advised I had passed stopway for runway 24. Runway 24 is a non-INS approach runway 50' X 3652'. Taxiway is in poor condition with grass growing on it. My reaction on seeing the 2 entrances to the runway (which I have never seen before in this confign) was that it was a great idea. An IFR plane could hold past the first taxi intersection and allow VFR aircraft to use that for takeoff. The area beyond the intersection was large enough to clear the intersection and remain clear of the runway, which is where I was when tower said I was past the stopway. While I am unfamiliar with the field, I did use runway 24 about 3 hours earlier and didn't see a stopway either time, nor could I see it on takeoff. I have to believe it was not well marked or was obscured by dirt or grass. If the 2 entranced to the runway are not to be used as described above, some sign to that effect should be placed on taxiway short of first intersection. Finally, since there apparently is a stopway, I should have seen it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA ALLEGEDLY PASSED TXWY STOPWAY AT RWY 24 AT PWK.
Narrative: TWR ADVISED I HAD PASSED STOPWAY FOR RWY 24. RWY 24 IS A NON-INS APCH RWY 50' X 3652'. TXWY IS IN POOR CONDITION WITH GRASS GROWING ON IT. MY REACTION ON SEEING THE 2 ENTRANCES TO THE RWY (WHICH I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN THIS CONFIGN) WAS THAT IT WAS A GREAT IDEA. AN IFR PLANE COULD HOLD PAST THE FIRST TAXI INTXN AND ALLOW VFR ACFT TO USE THAT FOR TKOF. THE AREA BEYOND THE INTXN WAS LARGE ENOUGH TO CLR THE INTXN AND REMAIN CLR OF THE RWY, WHICH IS WHERE I WAS WHEN TWR SAID I WAS PAST THE STOPWAY. WHILE I AM UNFAMILIAR WITH THE FIELD, I DID USE RWY 24 ABOUT 3 HRS EARLIER AND DIDN'T SEE A STOPWAY EITHER TIME, NOR COULD I SEE IT ON TKOF. I HAVE TO BELIEVE IT WAS NOT WELL MARKED OR WAS OBSCURED BY DIRT OR GRASS. IF THE 2 ENTRANCED TO THE RWY ARE NOT TO BE USED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, SOME SIGN TO THAT EFFECT SHOULD BE PLACED ON TXWY SHORT OF FIRST INTXN. FINALLY, SINCE THERE APPARENTLY IS A STOPWAY, I SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT.
