Narrative:

2300' X 50' paved runway. While departing NH40 airport on runway 14, I experienced a major power loss just before rotation. All preflight procedures were followed and the run-up showed no abnormalities. This engine was recently overhauled. I had recently had a 50 hour check. I immediately reduced power, stabilized the ground roll, applied heavy intermittent braking and retracted the takeoff flaps. The aircraft slowed to about 10 mph before rolling off the paved surface by about 35'. The propeller evidently struck a small mound of dirt off the runway end. The propeller damage seems to be the only damage. The aircraft is being repaired at this time. I do not feel that I could have done much more to stop the aircraft. The brake pads were new with new chrome brake discs. I used the full runway length. The only visible mechanical problem observed by a mechanic was fuel staining on a fuel injector. Further engine inspection will be performed when the propeller is reinstalled.

Title: PROPELLER STRIKE OCCURS AS SMA ABORTS TKOF AFTER ENGINE FAILURE AND RUNS OFF END OF RWY.

Narrative: 2300' X 50' PAVED RWY. WHILE DEPARTING NH40 ARPT ON RWY 14, I EXPERIENCED A MAJOR PWR LOSS JUST BEFORE ROTATION. ALL PREFLT PROCS WERE FOLLOWED AND THE RUN-UP SHOWED NO ABNORMALITIES. THIS ENG WAS RECENTLY OVERHAULED. I HAD RECENTLY HAD A 50 HR CHK. I IMMEDIATELY REDUCED PWR, STABILIZED THE GND ROLL, APPLIED HVY INTERMITTENT BRAKING AND RETRACTED THE TKOF FLAPS. THE ACFT SLOWED TO ABOUT 10 MPH BEFORE ROLLING OFF THE PAVED SURFACE BY ABOUT 35'. THE PROP EVIDENTLY STRUCK A SMALL MOUND OF DIRT OFF THE RWY END. THE PROP DAMAGE SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY DAMAGE. THE ACFT IS BEING REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. I DO NOT FEEL THAT I COULD HAVE DONE MUCH MORE TO STOP THE ACFT. THE BRAKE PADS WERE NEW WITH NEW CHROME BRAKE DISCS. I USED THE FULL RWY LENGTH. THE ONLY VISIBLE MECHANICAL PROB OBSERVED BY A MECH WAS FUEL STAINING ON A FUEL INJECTOR. FURTHER ENG INSPECTION WILL BE PERFORMED WHEN THE PROP IS REINSTALLED.
