Narrative:
Descending into mso, ATIS information and approach controller's clearance was for VOR/DME-B. Acquired field approximately 45 DME east. Approximately 20 DME east, informed approach control we had field in sight and proceeding visually, at which time approach issued clearance for VOR C approach and inquired as to altitude. Due to moderate turbulence, close proximity to airport and inability to communication with approach control due to frequency congestion with commuter aircraft, safety course of action was to continue visually to airport. Approach controller seemed confused as to our intentions. Continued to normal, uneventful approach and landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC AND PROBABLY UNAUTH LNDG.
Narrative: DSNDING INTO MSO, ATIS INFO AND APCH CTLR'S CLRNC WAS FOR VOR/DME-B. ACQUIRED FIELD APPROX 45 DME E. APPROX 20 DME E, INFORMED APCH CTL WE HAD FIELD IN SIGHT AND PROCEEDING VISUALLY, AT WHICH TIME APCH ISSUED CLRNC FOR VOR C APCH AND INQUIRED AS TO ALT. DUE TO MODERATE TURB, CLOSE PROX TO ARPT AND INABILITY TO COM WITH APCH CTL DUE TO FREQ CONGESTION WITH COMMUTER ACFT, SAFETY COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO CONTINUE VISUALLY TO ARPT. APCH CTLR SEEMED CONFUSED AS TO OUR INTENTIONS. CONTINUED TO NORMAL, UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG.
