Narrative:

Air carrier X on initial contact with departure (lga) control. Cleared to 8000' MSL followed by an unintelligible remark. When requesting clarification, we were told to maintain 7000'. We were given an initial heading of 340 degrees which was shortly thereafter corrected further to 310 degrees and a climb clearance to 15000'. Upon vacating 7200-7300' traffic was called at our 1 O'clock position and 3 mi at 8000' and same general direction of flight. Air carrier Y light transport was visually sighted and our rate of climb, given the parallel course, precluded any evasive action.
