Narrative:
The runway and taxiway have recently been shortened by the city of santa monica. The old taxiway markings were not removed; they just painted over with new ones with low grade paint that is coming off. I became confused by the mishmash of conflicting taxi markings and taxied onto a closed taxiway. I was instructed to taxi back to mid field for the new shorter runway length.
