Narrative:
Flying captain on an medium large transport Y model. Normally fly the X model. On which I am a proficeincy check airman. Flew last trip prior to this last week in july had been vacationing aug and first part of sept. Trip left clt 9/90. I let first officer fly the leg to rdu. After short night, departed rdu for clt. I was using the FMC in the navigation mode letting the computer handle all the navigation. Once on vectors for ILS runway 36R in clt, we completed the approach briefing, preliminary checklist, and I tuned in the ILS and selected manual on the navigation receiver after being vectored on base and turned to the intercept heading and cleared for the approach. After turning inbound controller advised us we were well east of the localizer. The HSI mode sel switch was still in navigation rather than VOR/ILS. I was tracking the computers computed final rather than the actual localizer. Being we were on the runway 36R approach there was no conflict. I won't make this mistake again, nor do I intend to get this stale again. I've got to get out of the box and fly more live trips!
