Narrative:
Cleared to descend by washington center, we approached shd airport from the nnw. Center had given us their 'latest' WX for shd, but approaching the field, we could see that an improvement had taken place. Approximately five mi out we had the airport in sight and cancelled our IFR flight plan. The copilot radioed washington that we were in VFR, after being told by a commuter pilot that the WX was below landing minimums. This flight seemed very self-important in his calls to center, but from over 3 mi from the runway end, we had the complete runway in sight. After an uneventful landing, we secured the aircraft to wait for our passengers return. Later that day we found out that this pilot had 'turned us in' for violating minimums. The facts are, we at no time were flying below minimums for this airport. The actual WX reported by a WX observer on the ground at approximately our time of landing was: clear, on mi visibility (see attachment). In-flight visibility was better than that reported by a FBO employee. The approach and landing were uneventful and routine. It was reported by many persons at the airport that the commuter pilot was rude and abusive during his brief stay at the airport, and also that he had landed earlier when the WX was below the reported WX at the time of our arrival.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR SMT LANDED AT SHD AS THE FOG WAS CLEARING. A COMMUTER PLT ON THE GND ALLEGES THE WX WAS STILL OFFICIALLY BELOW ARPT MINIMUMS FOR LNDG.
Narrative: CLRED TO DSND BY WASHINGTON CTR, WE APCHED SHD ARPT FROM THE NNW. CTR HAD GIVEN US THEIR 'LATEST' WX FOR SHD, BUT APCHING THE FIELD, WE COULD SEE THAT AN IMPROVEMENT HAD TAKEN PLACE. APPROX FIVE MI OUT WE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND CANCELLED OUR IFR FLT PLAN. THE COPLT RADIOED WASHINGTON THAT WE WERE IN VFR, AFTER BEING TOLD BY A COMMUTER PLT THAT THE WX WAS BELOW LNDG MINIMUMS. THIS FLT SEEMED VERY SELF-IMPORTANT IN HIS CALLS TO CTR, BUT FROM OVER 3 MI FROM THE RWY END, WE HAD THE COMPLETE RWY IN SIGHT. AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG, WE SECURED THE ACFT TO WAIT FOR OUR PAXS RETURN. LATER THAT DAY WE FOUND OUT THAT THIS PLT HAD 'TURNED US IN' FOR VIOLATING MINIMUMS. THE FACTS ARE, WE AT NO TIME WERE FLYING BELOW MINIMUMS FOR THIS ARPT. THE ACTUAL WX RPTED BY A WX OBSERVER ON THE GND AT APPROX OUR TIME OF LNDG WAS: CLR, ON MI VISIBILITY (SEE ATTACHMENT). INFLT VISIBILITY WAS BETTER THAN THAT RPTED BY A FBO EMPLOYEE. THE APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL AND ROUTINE. IT WAS RPTED BY MANY PERSONS AT THE ARPT THAT THE COMMUTER PLT WAS RUDE AND ABUSIVE DURING HIS BRIEF STAY AT THE ARPT, AND ALSO THAT HE HAD LANDED EARLIER WHEN THE WX WAS BELOW THE RPTED WX AT THE TIME OF OUR ARR.
