Narrative:
After deplaning in ZZZ the gate agent informed my first officer that a passenger had a lithium battery in his carry-on bag which had been placed in the baggage compartment. I'm guessing that it was a smart bag that was found by the baggage handlers when unloading. They took pictures and informed the gate agent. She told the first officer who then informed me about the situation. I talked to the agent who told me that the passenger said he 'forgot' about the battery. She forwarded her report to customer service.
