Narrative:

On takeoff from eri, we could not retract landing gear. We returned for a landing and discovered the alternate gear release door was open just enough to inhibit gear retraction but closed enough to appear closed in the dim cockpit. I pushed the altitude release door fully closed and test flew the aircraft. The gear operated normally. Being new to the mdt, I was used to seeing the alternate gear release door either fully closed or open, not halfway closed. I recommend that the captain or first officer push on the altitude release and extend door when doing the checklist to prevent the situation from recurring.
