Narrative:

Big sur arrival to sfo flown to 330 degree heading. Approach assigned heading and speed at 4000', then advised us about traffic for runway 20R, an medium large transport Y, and asked if we had the airport in sight. We advised the medium large transport Y and airport in sight. No visibility or approach clearance given. As we approached the centerline of runway 28L approach frequency was busy with clearance to aircraft behind us for visibility approach to left (runway 28L). As we crossed centerline of runway 28R above and behind medium large transport Y on approach to runway 28R we asked approach controller what they wanted us to do and clearance for visibility to runway 28L was issued.
