Narrative:

We departed lax on flight lax-tpa red eye. About 400 mi east of lax, center cleared us to tpa direct. As we got near the panhandle of fl, it was difficult to determine at night where the gulf and land are. We were in the process of determining how far off shore we were when center on 127.45 asked if we had required equipment for overwater flight. We did not, and asked for radar vectors to keep us within 50 mi. We came left to 080 degrees to intercept pfn 130 degree right. I gather by the controller we slightly exceeded 50 mi, but corrected quickly.
